Adaptability is key in today’s and tomorrow’s world of work and your career path.

Why adaptability is important in your career more than ever

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the workplace when looking forward to the future and a lot Adaptability is the key to your future career successof rapid and radical advancements. This means that we have to become comfortable with uncertainty. And we have to be adaptable. We need to be observant in how our industries and roles are changing and ensure we are able to adapt to change.

The days of a job for a life are pretty much gone and that leads to more options for us as employees and our careers. This again means adaptability is key. It means being clear on what skills and experience you have and how that lends itself to changes in your vocation, how it lends itself to other vocations and industries of interest to you and it presents us with the fresh challenges and increased learning for those of us who love those.

Employers want a workforce that embraces change, that is adaptable, that sees opportunities rather than limitations and fear, and that is open to moving in the direction the company is heading. Be that person.

How can you increase your adaptability outside of your 9-5?

With the explosion of online business and the benefits of technology in particular, harness your expertise and also look outside of your 9-5 job. What opportunities are there to build your professional brand for yourself in your own venture? Maybe freelancing, consulting, or perhaps something completely different? Think about what you’re interested in and consider if there are options for you to have a second string to your bow which you have time to invest in, want to engage with and that would provide more security in a changing workplace. After all, there is a need from employers for entrepreneurial attributes in their workforce.

The key is to pay attention to what is happening in your sector and workplace, make sure you’re adaptable, transferrable and open to change and pursing new challenges. And consider what interests you, what you can make happen for yourself and how can you carve out your own path in this new career landscape ahead of us.
